Why Dogs Roll in Poop
There are several reasons why some dogs roll in poop. One theory is that some dogs are attracted to the scent of poop and when they get near the scent, they will roll back in it and put it all over them in the same way that people put perfume or essential oils on them. Yet there is not a definite reason why dogs are attracted to very stinky things such as old food, dead fish or poop. It may be that your dog has a sensitive sense of smell.
Some animal psychology experts say that another reason why a dog may roll in poop is because he wants to alert other dogs in his group that he located a dead animal for alimentary purposes while other experts say the dog may not like the scent of the shampoos and conditioners from when they bathed. Some dogs may do this out of boredom or because they want attention from others.
Leftover Trait from Pre-Domesticity
Another theory about dogs rolling in poop is that prior to the days when dogs became widely domesticated, dogs were primarily used for hunting and when dogs hunted, they would mask their own scent as a way to trick predators who may come after them. This may not be the case for dogs who are homebound most of the time.
Doggy Wants to Mark Territory
You may not have thought of this, but another theory about dogs rolling in poop is that they want to mark their territory. Before a dog relieves his bodily fluids and feces, they look around to notice if other doga are around. Then the dog does his business and rolls in the poop as a way of letting other dogs know that this is is spot.
Meeting With Your Veterinarian
If you feel that this habit is due to another medical condition or if you are just annoyed by what the dog does, you can meet with the veterinarian to determine solutions to the problem. The veterinarian may recommend that you enroll your dog in obedience classes so he can learn proper dog behaviors. Besides this, there is not much that he can do for your dog.
Dogs roll in poop for a variety of reasons and if he continues to do this after you tried to train him in doing the opposite, see this as his way of showing you love and attention. Be sure to bathe the dog as often as possible if he is the type who rolls in poop many times during the week to keep him clean. If he is doing this out of boredom, look for toys that will keep him entertained and also take him on walks and other dog-related activities. When you show a lot of love to the dog, this may be one of his ways of thanking you in a weird and smelly way.
